One-liner#
A consistent approach: confirm → categorize urgency → identify reversible causes → plan repeat/next test → communicate.
Triage first (examples)#
- Critical values or symptoms suggesting emergent pathology → ED / urgent evaluation
- Mild, stable abnormalities in asymptomatic patients → outpatient follow-up plan
Workup framework#
- Verify the lab is real (repeat, hemolysis, fasting status, timing, lab error)
- Compare to prior values and baseline
- Review meds/supplements and recent illness
- Decide: repeat vs add-on testing vs visit vs referral
Documentation checklist#
- Interpretation (likely cause/differential)
- Repeat/next test and interval
- Symptom check and safety-netting
- Patient notification and follow-up plan
